Welcome to the Multiscale Biomaterials Engineering (MBE) Laboratory!


Our laboratory is dedicated to the research and education on developing multiscale (quantum, nano, micro, and macro) biomaterials and devices reinforced by artificial intelligence technology to (1) engineer, bank, and deliver small molecules, genes, peptides/proteins, cells, tissues, and organs; and (2) create 3D biomimetic systems in vitro with bioinspired spatiotemporal complexity. The ultimate goal is to deliver innovative solutions for improving the safety and efficacy of early detection and treatment of diseases including but not limited to cancer, infertility, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and neurological disorders.

2024.08 Congratulations to Samm! A paper with her as the first author on enhanced cryopreservation of ovarian follicles with an automatic ice-seeding device is accepted for publication in Journal of Medical Devices.

2024.07 Wenquan, Wei, Zhiyuan, and George attended the Society for Cryobiology 2024 Annual Meeting (CRYO2024) in Bethesda, MD. Wenquan successfully moderated a session on new devices and clinical implementation of thermal medicine as the session chair; Wei successfully moderated a session on real world cryopreservation from running biobanks, upgrading processes to cGMP, and accurate data tracking; and Wei and Zhiyuan presented the latest work in the lab on developing ingenious technologies for cell/tissue/organ banking and 3D culture of human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) for mass production of superb-quality human iPSC spheroids and human iPSC-derived beating cardiac organoids, respectively. George learned a lot on the field of Cryobiology and made many friends. Good work Wequan, Wei, Zhiyuan, and George!

2024.06 Congratulations to James! A paper with him as the first author on engineering in vitro models of human blood-brain barrier (BBB) is accepted for publication in Nature Biomedical Engineering.

2024.06 James Shamul begins his new position in the lab as a postdoc after completing his PhD from UMD in Bioengineering.

2024.05 Congratulations to Dr. He! His startup, HOHCells, LLC, is awarded the prestigious MSCRF Commercialization Program grant, to develop biomedical devices for 3D culture and banking of human iPSCs and their derivatives with high viability and function.

2024.04 James Shamul successfully defended his doctoral dissertation on glioblastoma stem cell isolation and targeting with a nanoparticle-based therapy to eliminate recurrence. Congratulations, Dr. Shamul!!

2023.10  Dr. He was named as one of the two Executive Co-Chairs to help organize the Society for Cryobiology Annual Meeting 2024 (CRYO2024) in the Washington DC metro area.

2023.10  James and Hyeyeon attended the 2023 Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) Annual Meeting in Seattle and delivered multiple oral presentations on their ongoing research.

2023.09  Tiancong Ma joined our lab as a postdoc after conducting nanotoxicity research in UCLA. Tiancong obtained his PhD from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and bachelor’s degree in polymer science and engineering from South China University of Technology. Welcome Tiancong!

2014.08   Dr. Hao Peng joined our lab as a Visiting Scholar. Dr. Peng is a Plastic Surgeon and Associate Prof. in the Department of Burns and Plastic Surgery at Xianya 3rd Hospital, Central South University, Changsha, Hunan, China. His is interested in applying micro and nanoscale biomaterials to tissue engineering for burns and plastic surgery. Welcome Dr. Peng!

2014.02   Shuting Zhao and Haishui Huang delivered two podium presentations, respectively, at the ASME 3rd Global Congress on NanoEngineering for Medicine and Biology in San Francisco, CA. Shuting’s talks were on developing microscale biomaterials to engineer pluripotent stem cells for cardiac regeneration and to enrich cancer stem-like cells. Haishui’s talks were on developing novel approaches to extract particles in microfluidics on-chip and to bank pluripotent stem cells.

2014.02   Dr. He delivered a keynote talk on biomimetic 3D microtissue engineering at the ASME 3rd Global Congress on NanoEngineering for Medicine and Biology in San Francisco, CA.

2013.12   Congratulations to Dr. Hai Wang for receiving the prestigious Pelotonia Postdoctoral Fellowship. Dr. Wang will join our lab in February 2014 as a Pelotonia postdoctoral research fellow.

2013.12   Dr. He visited the National Institute of Materials Science, University of Tokyo, Kyoto University, and Osaka University in Japan as a member of a team of 10 young US scientists selected by NSF to participate the 2013 US-Japan Young Scientists Symposium on Nano-Bio. Dr. He also delivered two talks at University of Tokyo and Kyoto University.

2013.11   Congratulations to Jack and Ben for their successful engineering design projects with and presentations to middle schoolers in KIPP Academy in Linden, OH as part of the OSU College of Engineering inaugural program of Translating Engineering Research to K-8. Jack (in red shirt) was featured on a movie clip in a news article talking about his summer research on microencapsulation in our lab for this program.

2013.02   A total of 6 presentations were delivered at the ASME 2013 2nd Global Congress on Nanoengineering for Medicine and Biology by Shuting Zhao (2 on developing novel microscale biomaterials for stem cell based therapy and tissue regeneration using electrospray), Pranay Agarwal (2 on developing novel microscale biomaterials for assisted reproduction and stem cell based tissue regeneration using microfluidics), and Wei Rao (2 on developing novel combined therapies of nanoparticle-mediated delivery of anticancer compounds and thermo/cryo therapy for improved cancer destruction).
